Gokyo valley trekking is bit strenuous trekking trail compared to the popular Everest Base Camp classic route with two high passes: the Renjo La (5345m) and another Cho La (5420m). The trek will also take you to Namche Bazaar which is popular with trekkers. Mostly used for altitude acclimatization where people stay for a night or two to acclimatize themselves to the thinning oxygen levels in the air, this is also a getaway to most of the hike to Base Camp and other Expedition in this area. The town has a number of lodgings and store catering to the needs of visitors as well as a number of internet cafes, making it on few places in the region where trekkers can access the internet. The trek will also take you to Khumjung which is another famous village in this area. Khumjung village is located in the Khumbu region of Sagarmatha National Park, a world heritage site. It lies at the elevation of 3970m above sea level and situated near Mt. Khumbila (5761m.) which is believed to be a sacred mountain and thus no attempts to climb this mountain is made.
A monastery in Khumjung also boasts of having a Yeti scalp and is one of the attractions in this village. With communication such as internet and mobiles available, this village is one of the main attractions in this region. With Everest View Hotel which is the highest located hotel in the world and commands a spectacular view of Mt. Everest (8,848 m.)
Gokyo Valley Trekking can be perfect for those looking for some serious trekking but do not have much of technical knowledge in climbing. Renjo La is a high pass that lies at the elevation of 5300m. The view from Renjo La is one of its kind where far down you see Gokyo Valley with Gokyo lake with some lodges around. The panoramic view of Mt. Everest from this area is something where you can get from nowhere else in this region. Cho La is another high pass in this trek that is location 5420m above sea level that connects to the village of Dzongla (4830m) to the east and the village of Thangnak (4700m) to the west.
Passing through the two rugged high passes this trek is less traveled due to its strenuous nature of trek that takes us slowly through the Sherpa villages and Yak pastures before reaching Gokyo Valley via Renjo. The view of Everest from here is priceless and worth all the hard walks. The higher route of Cho La pass finally leads us to Machhermo from where we descend towards Lukla instead of the mainstream path that leads to Everest Base Camp Trek.
