Nepal Solo Restricted Area Trekking Permits 2026

Exciting Update: Solo Trekkers Now Welcome in Nepal's Restricted Areas!

Great news for the solo explorers and mountain lovers! As of March 2026, the Government of Nepal has officially updated its trekking policies, making it easier than ever to visit some of the most remote and mystical corners of the Himalayas.

The long-standing rule requiring a minimum of two trekkers for Restricted Area Permits (RAP) has been removed. You no longer need to search for a trekking partner or join a group just to get a permit!

What’s New?

  • Solo Permits are Live: Individual travelers can now obtain permits for famous restricted regions like Manaslu Circuit, Upper Mustang, Upper/Lower Dolpo, Kanchenjunga, and Nar-Phu.
  • Online Application: The permit system is now fully digital. Permits can be processed online, and you can even start the application process from your home country using your visa submission ID.
  • Simplified Planning: No more waiting around in Kathmandu to find a "permit partner"—you can stick to your own schedule.

Important Rules to Remember

While you can now trek "solo" (as the only tourist), the safety and regulatory standards remain high:

  1. Mandatory Guide: You must be accompanied by a licensed trekking guide at all times. Trekking completely alone without a guide is still not permitted in these areas.

  2. Registered Agency Only: Permits cannot be issued to individuals directly. They must be processed through a government-registered trekking agency (like Rugged Trails Nepal).

  3. Agency Responsibility: The trekking agency remains responsible for your logistics, safety, and emergency rescue arrangements.

Rugged Trails Nepal Tip: This is a game-changer for those who prefer the peace and flexibility of solo travel. Whether you've been dreaming of the "Forbidden Kingdom" of Lo Manthang or the rugged isolation of Dolpo, your solo adventure is now just a booking away!
