While these wonders are true, some might be surprised to learn that Nepal offers incredible treks suited for all experience levels, including beginners! Nepal is undeniably an amazing landscape, the home of the world's tallest mountain peaks, cultures that none of the worlds has, and full of glorious social and geographical marvels. With all that, we are here talking about the treks that can be fit for beginners. We often receive emails, and while travelling abroad to places like Europe, America, Australia, and some Asian countries, people only think that travelling in Nepal is just walking for weeks, which is extremely hard and nothing to see within a short time period. Can beginners trek in Nepal?

Langtang Valley Trek

A Note for Beginners, Families, and Children: While this trek is highly recommended for first-timers, it is crucial to choose an itinerary designed for a gentle pace. Some operators may offer a shortened 5-day version of the Langtang Valley Trek, but this compressed schedule can feel like a marathon for beginners and families, rushing the acclimatization process and making the journey more strenuous than enjoyable. Therefore, carefully confirm that your chosen plan prioritizes a relaxed pace with adequate time for rest and adaptation.

The Langtang Valley Trek offers a moderately easy adventure for beginners in Nepal. Despite the popularity of Everest and Annapurna treks, we, as local travel experts, can guarantee that Langtang holds its own unique charm. Its rich culture, diverse landscapes, ethnic villages, and stunning mountain ranges make it a hidden gem in the Himalayas. While a rushed 5-day itinerary exists, we strongly recommend our 7-day trek, which provides a more relaxed pace, proper acclimatization, and is the truly ideal choice for a safe and rewarding beginner's experience.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Ghandruk Trek

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Ghandruk Trek is one of the easiest and most popular short trekking routes in Nepal. Many travellers arriving in Nepal dream of seeing the Himalayas up close, making this trek a top choice. Poon Hill's viewpoint offers stunning panoramic views, a highlight of the journey. Ghandruk, a traditional Gurung village, adds another layer of uniqueness. The Ghorepani Poon Hill tour can be completed in 2 days from Pokhara. Including Tadapani and Ghandruk requires 3 days total.

The short Ghorepani Ghandruk trek is one of Rugged Trails Nepal's best-selling short trekking packages. Experienced hikers call it the "Chicken Trek" in Annapurna due to its relative ease compared to other trails. We emphasise that age is no barrier for this Ghorepani Ghandruk circuit trek; previous hiking experience is not necessary. We offer various trekking packages. Mohare-Danda Ghorepani Trek

Mohare Danda, perched above Poon Hill in the Annapurna foothills, offers another stunning vantage point. While some consider it an alternative to Ghorepani Poon Hill, we don't want to diminish Poon Hill's charm. However, Mohare Danda boasts truly breathtaking views. Experience it for yourself on our unique trek itinerary, which combines both viewpoints! After finding these enchanted trails, our team leader created an itinerary that is flexible and can last anywhere between 4 and 7 days. We start the adventure in Pokhara, skipping the Kathmandu leg for most short treks.

Springtime paints Mohare Danda in vibrant hues, with rhododendron forests bursting into colourful display and landscapes unfurling their beauty from the majestic viewpoint. Mardi Himal Trekking: 3 to 5 Days

The Mardi Himal Trek is a jewel of the Annapurna region, offering a truly magical experience with its intimate, close-up views of Mt Fishtail, Annapurna South, and Heuchuli, set against enchanting rhododendron forests and high alpine grasslands. While it stands out as a moderately easy route, the key to a successful and enjoyable trek, especially for beginners, lies in choosing the right itinerary.

We at Rugged Trails Nepal believe in responsible trekking. While a rushed 3-day itinerary is popular among very active hikers, we strongly recommend a 4 to 5-day plan for beginners. This longer schedule allows your body the essential time to acclimatize to the increasing altitude, transforming the journey from a strenuous race into a comfortable and immersive adventure. The trail reaches a maximum elevation of 4,200 meters (13,780 ft) at the viewpoint, with the base camp further up at 4,500 meters (14,764 ft). For most trekkers, the Mardi Himal Viewpoint offers the most spectacular and rewarding panorama, and we typically do not recommend pushing to the Base Camp due to the significant altitude gain.

It's important to be aware that at these heights, the air is thin, and some trekkers may experience mild headaches or symptoms of altitude sickness. This is normal, but it underscores the importance of a well-paced trek and professional support. This is precisely why having an experienced guide from Rugged Trails Nepal is invaluable. Your guide is more than just a navigator; they are a trained companion who monitors your health, ensures you ascend at a safe pace, provides companionship, and shares deep knowledge of the Himalayas—turning a simple hike into an insightful journey.

Accessible via a short 25-minute flight or a 6-hour scenic drive from Kathmandu, starting from Pokhara, the Mardi Himal Trek is your perfect gateway to the Himalayas. Let us help you plan the correct itinerary for an unforgettable and safe adventure.

Mulde Hill Ghorepani Trek

Discover the Mulde Hill Trek, a spectacular short trek in the Annapurna region that combines breathtaking Himalayan panoramas with rich cultural immersion. Perfect for those searching for an easy trek in Nepal or a family-friendly hike, this journey leads to the 3,637-meter summit of Mulde Hill, offering unrivaled views of Mt. Fishtail and Annapurna South, as well as the famous panoramic vista from Poon Hill. Following the recent road expansion to Ghorepani via Ulleri, the trail to Ghorepani via the Dobato Muldai Viewpoint has become the premier alternative, offering a pristine and tranquil hiking experience away from vehicle traffic.

Our carefully designed "Short Mulde Viewpoint Trek" itinerary is ideal for beginners and families, covering the key highlights of Tadapani, Dobato (Mulde Hill), and Ghorepani Poon Hill. The adventure begins in the iconic Ghandruk Village—a premier Gurung village experience in Nepal—easily reached by a short jeep ride from Pokhara.

The trail itself is a highlight, weaving through rhododendron forests that burst into a riot of color in the spring, creating a photographer's paradise. While this is a moderate trek suitable for most fitness levels, the best seasons for trekking are:

  • Spring (March-May) for vibrant rhododendron blooms
  • Autumn (October-November) for crystal-clear mountain views
  • Winter (December-February) for a stunning snowy landscape

As a budget-friendly trekking option, the cost for the Mulde Hill trek starts at around $300 from Pokhara, with competitive group discounts available. We at Rugged Trails Nepal have extensive experience guiding family treks with children on this route, ensuring a safe and memorable adventure for all ages.

Khopra Ridge Trek: A Beginner-Friendly Hidden Gem

Venture off the beaten path with the Khopra Ridge (Danda) Trek, a stunning journey through the Annapurna foothills that offers a perfect blend of adventure and accessibility for beginners. While this is a moderate trek, its suitability for newcomers hinges on choosing the correct itinerary. We at Rugged Trails Nepal specifically recommend a 7-day plan for beginners, as it provides the essential time needed for proper acclimatization and ensures a comfortable, rewarding pace.

Best Time to Trek: The ideal windows for beginners are during the stable weather of spring (March-May) and autumn (October-November), which offer clear skies and the best mountain views. For those seeking a different kind of beauty, the monsoon (July-September) transforms the landscape into a lush, emerald-green paradise with spectacular rainbows and the thrilling sight of the Himalayas emerging from the clouds. However, be prepared for rain and leeches on the trail. We generally do not suggest winter (December-February) for beginners due to significant snow and potentially icy conditions on the narrow trails.

The crown jewel of this trek is reaching Khopra Danda (3,660 meters / 12,008 ft), a viewpoint we highly recommend for all trekkers. From this spectacular ridge, you are rewarded with uninterrupted panoramic views of the entire Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The journey itself winds through enchanting rhododendron forests, across scenic ridges, and through traditional villages, offering a diverse and immersive experience.

For those seeking an extra challenge, the trek offers an optional side trip to the sacred Khayer Lake (approx. 4,600 meters / 15,092 ft). This is a demanding full-day excursion from Khopra Danda with no lodging available, requiring a return to the same teahouse. We emphasize that this extension is only for seasoned trekkers and is not recommended for beginners. Our standard 7-day package includes this as a flexible option, which can be skipped to maintain a relaxed itinerary, allowing you to customize your adventure in consultation with your guide.

Ready for a safe and unforgettable beginner adventure? Our expert guides are dedicated to your safety and comfort. Contact us to book our recommended 7-day Khopra Ridge trek and tailor your perfect Himalayan journey

Ghorepani Poon Hill and Mardi Himal Trek: Combined Trek

Are you a hiking enthusiast with experience on trails back home, looking to take your adventure to the next level in the majestic Himalayas? The Ghorepani Poon Hill Mardi Himal Combined Trek is the perfect best combined trek in Annapurna for you. This journey is designed for those who want to immerse themselves deeply in the beauty of Nepal without a lengthy time commitment.

A Quick Note on Winter Treks: We want to be fully transparent to help you plan the best possible adventure. During the mid-winter season (December-February), we do not recommend the Mardi Himal portion of this trek for beginners, as the trail becomes significantly more challenging with snow and ice. The route to Mardi Himal High Camp and the Viewpoint is often closed due to heavy snowfall. If you are considering a winter trek in Nepal, we highly recommend focusing on the beautiful and more accessible Ghorepani Poon Hill section, which offers a spectacular and safer winter hiking experience.

To ensure you have the most rewarding experience, we warmly encourage preparation. The trekking terrain in Nepal is uniquely rugged, with frequent ascents and descents that can be challenging. We recommend starting a regular hiking training plan before you arrive—like weekend walks with elevation gain—to build your stamina and confidence. This preparation ensures you can fully enjoy the incredible journey ahead.

This specially curated 7-day Annapurna hiking package weaves together the region's most iconic highlights into one unforgettable adventure. You will witness the sunrise panorama from Poon Hill, immerse yourself in the rich culture of Ghandruk Gurung village, and trek through the serene, high-altitude grasslands of Mardi Himal. Each day offers a new landscape and a fresh perspective, making it one of the most diverse trekking experiences in Nepal.

This is a moderate trek in Nepal, ideal for active individuals with some previous hiking experience. Our carefully planned itinerary balances exhilarating climbs with gentle walks, all supported by our experienced guides who are dedicated to your safety, well-being, and sharing the hidden stories of the Himalayas.

Jomsom Muktinath Trekking: A Spiritual Journey in the Himalayan Desert

Muktinath Temple stands as one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in Nepal, revered by both Hindus and Buddhists alike. Perched at 3,800 meters, this spiritual destination is set within a breathtaking, almost surreal landscape that shatters the common perception of a green Nepal, revealing the stark, majestic beauty of the high Himalayan desert.

The journey begins with a spectacular short flight from Pokhara to Jomsom, transporting you into a different world of unique desert topography and traditional villages, all set against a backdrop of stunning Annapurna peaks. It is important for modern travelers to know that this classic route has evolved. While it remains a popular pilgrimage trek in Nepal, the trail now shares the path with a road. This means you will encounter vehicles, but it also offers a unique perspective on the region and flexible travel options.

Given this development, we present this adventure with full transparency: This is now as much a cultural and spiritual road trip as it is a traditional trek. You can choose to trek alongside the road, experiencing the unchanged lifestyle of the mountain people, or opt for a Jeep tour to Muktinath or even a motorbike adventure in Mustang. Each option allows you to witness the world's deepest gorge, explore exotic landscapes, and culminate your journey at the sacred temple, where you can partake in the ritual of bathing in the 108 sacred springs.

After your spiritual visit, descend to rejuvenate in the natural hot springs of Tatopani before concluding with a classic Himalayan finale—a sunrise spectacle from Poon Hill, where the sun paints the Annapurna range in a golden glow.

Unsure whether to trek or take a vehicle? Let our experts help you design the perfect Jomsom Muktinath experience based on your preferences. Contact us to plan your spiritual and adventurous journey today!

Do we need Travel Insurance for all the mentioned trekking routes?

Yes, absolutely. Travel insurance is not just a suggestion; it is a mandatory requirement for booking with us and for your own safety on any trek in Nepal. Think of it as your essential safety net. The right policy protects you from unforeseen events that could otherwise disrupt your trip and finances. It typically covers critical aspects like:

  • Emergency Helicopter Rescue and Medical Evacuation: This is the most crucial coverage for trekking. In remote mountain areas, this is the only way to get urgent medical care.
  • Medical Expenses: For treatment of injuries or illnesses, including potential altitude sickness.
  • Trip Cancellation or Interruption: If you have to cancel or cut your trip short due to a personal emergency, illness, or family issue.
  • Lost, Stolen, or Delayed Baggage.

While we cannot recommend a single specific company, we have vetted several providers known for offering policies suitable for adventure travel. To make your search easier, we've created a dedicated resource page listing some of the best and most affordable travel insurance companies that cover high-altitude trekking in Nepal.

For a detailed comparison and to find the right policy for your adventure, please visit our guide here: [Best Travel Insurance Companies Page]

Which is the easiest base camp trek in Nepal?

Well, Annapurna Base Camp is also considered the easiest base camp trek, as is Mardi Himal Base Camp. But the speedy or short Annapurna base camp trek is not suitable for beginners; instead, pick the longer version of the Ghorepani Annapurna base camp trek, which gives you more time to adapt and slow down. Keep in mind that on most easy trekking routes, we will be walking under 4500 m, and ascending and descending are very common on all the easy or extremely challenging trekking routes. On easy treks, you don't need any previous hiking experience and don't need to worry about altitude sickness; simply trekking gear will suffice.

Which is the shortest trek in Nepal among those suggested?

The shortest one, the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek from Pokhara, and the Kathmandu Valley Trek, which covers Nagarkot, are the shortest trekking routes in Nepal. Some of the treks can be customised for 1 day to 2 days, which is generally a shorter hiking list than the treks, but the views are magnifique.

How do I choose a trek in Nepal?

Below, we are sorting by the different regions, and the pictures are from the trek viewpoint or the location, so the easiest way to pick which region you want to trek and for how long!

Which is the most scenic, easy trek in Nepal?

All the below suggested trekking routes are scenic, so if you are considering Mount Everest, you have to pick the Everest Region trek; if you are looking for the Annapurna Ranges, Annapurna Region, or Langtang Region

Which is the best month for trekking in Nepal?

Well, this question is very tricky, but again, we have to be very honest and say that March, April, MayOctober, and November are the best months to trek in Nepal. This is a very common answer, and that is how Nepal tourism is promoted, but here we have different views on the best time of the year to visit. Let's talk in detail about why other months and seasons are still the best to visit in Nepal. If you have your vacation during the monsoon period, like July to September, then you shouldn't come to Nepal. We are not saying you shouldn't, but we are saying that's the best time if you want to experience the greenery, beautiful water falls, grassy land, beautiful lakes and flowers, and, of course, the snow peak. It might be cloudy or rainy for some hours, but still, the below-suggested treks are doable all year. And on another winter trek in December, January, and February, you will be amazed by the complete snowy mountain peaks. The rest of the time, you will see the snowcapped peaks, but in winter, you will see completely snow-covered peaks. You will need some extra layers of clothes and gear, but the treks are not extreme, and our mountain guides will take care of your safety. We will only suggest appropriate trekking itineraries for winter treks.

Conclusion: Your Himalayan Adventure Awaits

Ready to embark on your Himalayan adventure? Nepal welcomes you with welcoming arms and trails that lead not only to breathtaking views but also to self-discovery and a deeper connection with nature and culture. So, prepare your belongings, put on your boots, and experience the enchantment of Nepal's beginner-friendly treks. Remember, the greatest journeys often begin with a single step. Take yours today! This blog is just a starting point. Feel free to explore further, ask questions, and connect with us to craft your own personalised trekking adventure in Nepal. There are other short and easy treks, such as the Khumai Danda and Kori Danda treks, but we are not listing them now since the lodges and food are not as good as the above-suggested trekking packages. For now, Khumai Danda and Kori Danda Treks are perfect and trending trekking destinations for Nepalese travellers.
